New York Café is the perfect example of how a wonderful experience can be spoiled by poor organization.

We visited on a Saturday, and the place is indeed absolutely stunning. There was a queue outside, with a waiting time of at least 30 minutes, which I found perfectly understandable considering the day and the time we arrived.

However, once we got inside, we had two unpleasant surprises. First, there were plenty of empty tables, certainly enough to make us wonder why such a long queue was necessary outside. Second, and this was what ultimately convinced us not to stay, as soon as we sat down, a waitress came over and told us that whatever we ordered would take at least 40 minutes to arrive.

I completely understand that restaurants can get extremely busy, especially during peak hours. However, New York Café is one of Budapest’s most famous and visited places, so a high number of customers should hardly come as a surprise to the staff. Better organization would make a huge difference.

It is a real shame because the location itself is spectacular, but under these circumstances, the experience felt extremely overrated. We eventually decided to leave, disappointed.

Fortunately, our day was saved by Gerbeaud Café, which is actually even older than New York Café and where the experience was wonderful — well organized, welcoming and truly enjoyable.

Beautiful place, unfortunately disappointing experience.

Food was absolutely amazing— we were fortunate to sit near the live music during our dinner and the live orchestra was fantastic. The inside was absolutely stunning with beautiful frescos. We had the fried chicken, New York hamburger and Cesar Salad with shrimp— all delicious! Our server- Norbin- was very kind and attentive. 10/10 recommend! I recommend making reservations beforehand as it can get very busy.

Amazing location. Everything looks authentic, old and fascinating. If you’re in Budapest for vacation you have to do a quick stop here.
Food is good, if the bread was toasted it would’ve been even better. Coffee is very good.
Not an amazing service since they left us without menù for a while but it was an occasional mistake since they didn’t with everybody else. Also you got to serve always ladies first.
Overall GREAT experience, very recommended.

Is it expensive there?
-> Yes, but still affordable. 80€ for 2 people.

Did you like it?
-> If you get an great waiter as we had with Csongor, yes, you will get treated really well.

Where in the café were you sitting?
-> We booked our table upfront at the gallery and it was perfect. Honestly I wouldn't book a table at the regular New York area downstairs. Staff there was pretty busy and not very friendly which will ruin your experience there.

Did the visit make it worth it?
-> I think for the one time experience and Instagram pictures you can go for it.

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ Unrealistically beautiful place, a must visit!

Incredible experience! The interior looks spectacular, literally like a castle filled with gold and crystal chandeliers. The coffee and traditional Dobos cake were excellent and served superbly. The prices are high, but you pay for the entrance to history and an ambiance that does not exist anywhere else in the world. Live music in the background creates the perfect atmosphere. It is recommended to come early in the morning to avoid the crowds at the entrance. A pure five!

Stopped by around 8pm, having heard that this place was something of a Budapest institution and in search of dessert. We were seated immediately. The interior is incredible and opulent, a live band was playing music. Our dessert was great and the atmosphere impeccable. Service was kind of slow, but par for the course in Budapest. Prices were high, but you're paying for the space and atmosphere. Worth dipping in while visiting.

This is a very touristy place. It’s the most famous restaurant in Budapest so you’ve got to go. The food is good, but it’s incredibly overpriced and you feel very rushed while you’re there. It’s lavishly decorated and it’s great for pictures of the beautiful ladies in your party. The history is great with all the writers and artists who used to eat there. I’m glad we ate there. I just don’t know that we would go back. There’s so much better options. We can relax and enjoy your meal without feeling hurried to get out the door. It seems like they’re trying to give you a luxury male but get you out the door quickly so they can turn the table.

Not long ago I bought a book called "150 coffee shops you should visit before you die" and thanks to this book I came across the New York cafè, which intrigued me for the reinassance style architecture. Discovering this cafe led me to book a flight for Budapest (yes, I booked a flight only for this coffee shop).

My experience was overall magnificent. I stayed two full hours and despite the long queue I wasn't rushed to leave (despite my table was booked for 1h). I had a first drink then a main followed by dessert and coffee.

The stuff was very nice, the food was really good and loved the entertainment with piano and violin player. In particular one violin performance was the Game of Thrones theme (a show that I love).

The overall experience was just mesmerizing and it's a place I would raccomend everyone to visit at least once.

I hope I'll have the chance to go back to experience this again.

The New York Café is undeniably beautiful and impressive from an architectural point of view, but unfortunately, our experience did not live up to the expectations or the prices.

Since we had not made a reservation, we were seated in one of the less attractive rooms, where the temperature was uncomfortably cold and the heating/air conditioning did not seem to be properly regulated. This made the experience far less enjoyable than it should have been.

What was even more disappointing was the extremely poor value for money. The prices are extraordinarily high: a latte macchiato costs around €14, while an orange juice, also around €14, tasted extremely diluted, almost like water. Considering these prices, we expected a much higher standard of quality. Unfortunately, some of the items we ordered were served lukewarm and did not meet the level one would reasonably expect from such a renowned café.

For breakfast, we were also surprised to find that there were no traditional croissants or similar pastries available. The rest of the food is priced extremely high as well, making it difficult to justify the overall cost of the experience.

There is no doubt that the New York Café is an iconic and spectacular place, and the interior is certainly worth seeing. However, beautiful surroundings alone cannot justify such high prices. We expected a much more refined overall experience, particularly in terms of comfort, service, and the quality of the food and drinks.

Overall, it is an impressive place to admire, but unfortunately, the experience simply does not justify the price.

This was an amazing experience and a second trip in 4 days. We were so impressed by the staff, food and drink and the service that we came back Lillia was attentive and accommodating and really went the extra mile. Thank you New York Cafe for giving us some incredible memories of Budapest. I highly recommend a visit. We will be back next time we come to Budapest. The atmosphere, staff and the decor just made this magical

Beautiful building, disappointing experience.

New York Café Budapest is undeniably beautiful, but unfortunately, the experience did not live up to the setting.

The women’s restroom was dirty, with only one working toilet, and the trash was overflowing. Even the large, beautiful mirrors in the dining area were visibly dirty, which was especially disappointing in such an elaborate and otherwise impressive interior.

The service was the biggest issue. Our waiter was rude, aggressive, and unnecessarily combative. Our party of seven was mostly ignored, so we asked for our check. After waiting approximately 15 minutes while he continued cleaning other tables, we asked again. Rather than simply bringing the bill, he became argumentative and insisted that we had not asked for two separate checks. We explained that we would be happy with one check, but he continued arguing with us instead of simply resolving the issue.

The café itself is stunning, but the lack of cleanliness and the poor service seriously detracted from the experience. A beautiful interior cannot make up for dirty facilities and disrespectful treatment of customers. I would not recommend New York Café based on our experience.

A truly beautiful café with breathtaking ambience and stunning decoration. The coffee was excellent, and the cake was absolutely delicious!

A special thanks to Mr. B.Balázs for his exceptional service. He was incredibly friendly and attentive, making our visit even more enjoyable.

It was a very hot day, and although they don't serve iced chocolate, they kindly gave me a separate glass of ice cubes so I could enjoy it cold. Such a thoughtful gesture—not every place would go the extra mile like that.

Highly recommended, and I'll definitely be back the next time I'm in Budapest!

If you’re visiting New York Café for the experience, the atmosphere alone is worth seeing. The interior is beautiful and full of character, and the live piano and violin music adds to the overall atmosphere.

Unfortunately, that’s where the positives end. The food was extremely disappointing, completely bland and lacking flavor. I would recommend avoiding it. The coffee was just as bad, yet heavily overpriced, seemingly justified only by the edible gold sprinkled on top for presentation.

On top of that, the prices are outrageous, and the wait for the food was much longer than expected. It’s worth visiting for the interior alone. However, if you’re looking for quality food and coffee, there are far better places in Budapest.

It’s a nice, attractive setting, though very busy and crowded, which makes the service extremely slow. We wanted to spend a little time enjoying the place, but we ended up staying over an hour—waiting at least 20 minutes for our food and another 10 minutes just to get the bill. We knew it was a bit of a tourist trap, but we didn't expect such long waits for such a famous café. I’d recommend skipping it and going to one of the nearby restaurants instead.

Great place for coffee lovers and also affordable prices. It’s a very calm place to enjoy own company along with live music. It gives equal treatment for all kinds of customers. Better dress well, just like going to party so that you don’t feel embarrassed in front of the crowd. Great place for couples and families for memorable occasions.

The coffee place is beautiful. I reserved in advanced and there was no waiting time. They placed us at a very nice table next to the window, the service with Agnes was really good. She was very polite and welcoming.
The place is beautiful and the life piano music makes it feel very calm :)

I arrived early in the morning at 7:30AM and didn't have to wait in line at all. I highly recommend coming early!

Before visiting, I read many reviews saying the food wasn't great, so we only ordered drinks. To my surprise, the drinks were actually very good, and the Americano even came with milk. However, the prices are definitely much higher than at other cafes.

I must say that the staff serving us throughout the day were quite nice. However, at the very last moment when we were paying the bill, we were double-checking why there were four items listed when we had only ordered three drinks.

While we were looking, the male waiter rudely and unhappily pressed 0% on the tip option for us. Right at that exact moment, we spotted that the fourth item on the bill was already a 15% service charge. It was a very unpleasant way to end the meal, and with that kind of attitude, I would have pressed 0% myself anyway.

The venue itself is absolutely beautiful, and the live music created a lovely atmosphere, which we really enjoyed.

Unfortunately, our experience was significantly affected by the service we received from one of the waiters, Greggo. He appeared to struggle to understand our order, even though we specifically asked him to confirm that he had understood it correctly, and he assured us that he had.

When the order arrived incorrectly, we politely mentioned the issue, but his response was dismissive and came across as quite aggressive. He stated that we should have clarified it at the beginning, despite the fact that we had already confirmed the order with him. At that point, we had barely eaten any of it and still had over 70% of the ice cream left.

Our initial interaction with him was also disappointing. When we asked what the café’s specialties were, his response was essentially to forget the specialties and just order whatever we liked. Overall, his manner felt cold, dismissive, and unwelcoming.

It is a real shame, as the venue itself is stunning and the ambiance, especially with the live music, is beautiful. If you are visiting purely for photographs, it is certainly worth seeing. However, if you are hoping for a pleasant dining experience, you may be better off going elsewhere.

I would like to add that the gentleman who initially welcomed us and showed us to our table was very friendly and courteous, and the waiter who brought our drinks was also pleasant.

The café is very pretty (most beautiful in the world ;)). We had to wait around an hour to go inside (15u30 - 16u30). The staff was very friendly and the food was delicious. We ordered the goulash soup with bread and butter, and the spaghetti with pecorino cheese and mushrooms. Very delicious meals. We also ordered the raspberry and pistachio tart. The hot meals arrived approximately half an hour later. Other tables ordered desserts and coffees and they got their order very quickly. The only thing to take in mind, is that there is not only a waiting line outside of the cafe, but also if you have to use the restroom (there are only 2 women’s restrooms).

Beautiful place, but unfortunately, that’s about it.

We waited around 5 minutes to be seated, even though there were several empty tables. A lot of them hadn’t been cleared, so the whole place looked quite messy and dirty.
eventially we were seated and given the menus. I ordered a cocktail, while my brother ordered a drink and food. His drink and the food arrived, but after 20 minutes I was still waiting for my cocktail. We asked where it was and were told, “It’ll be coming soon, we have a lot of orders.” Okay… We waited some more, asked again, and then found out that they had actually forgotten to put my order in at all.

The architecture of the café is beautiful, but that’s pretty much the only impressive thing about it. The tables and chairs honestly felt more like a school old cafeteria than a nice café. a lot of uncleaned tabbles.
and the queue for the toilet was even longer than the queue to get into the café. 😅

Overall, a beautiful place to look at, but the service and atmosphere were disappointing.
